Walmart always jumps at the chance to compete with Amazon's Prime events, though it's never stuck to a set formula for its counter-programming. Sometimes the big-box store goes all-out on a formal sale that runs alongside its rival's; other times, it's just dropped some conveniently scheduled doorbusters and matched prices.

Walmart switched things up yet again with the Walmart Deals Holiday Kickoff event, a new online sale featuring "hot deals on thousands of the most-wanted gifts this holiday season," per a press release. The event began on Monday, Oct. 9 at 12 p.m. ET and runs through Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. ET — and while it's a relatively small affair compared to Prime Big Deal Days, Amazon's 48-hour October Prime Day sale on Oct. 10 and 11, it has an edge for being live for double the time.

Other than its timing, the key difference between the Walmart Deals Holiday Kickoff event and Prime Big Deal Days is that the former isn't gatekept behind a membership fee. (Amazon's Prime events are always restricted to Prime subscribers.) Walmart also opted against offering members of its Walmart+ program early access to select deals, which we've seen it do during some of its past anti-Prime Day sales. In other words, it's a free-for-all.

SEE ALSO: October Prime Day is over, but these deals are still live on Amazon

One thing Walmart does have in common with Amazon is a penchant for messing with products' list prices, a practice that can make deals look better or worse than they actually are. It also loves to include older, not-worth-it-anymores that have been discontinued by their manufacturers and products sold by questionable third-party sellers in sales like these. As such, we peruse its doorbusters with our finest fine-toothed combs.

Below, we're keeping a running list of the very best deals from the Walmart Deals Holiday Kickoff sale. If you see an original list price that doesn't match what Walmart's advertising, it's because we found a different (correct) one when we cross-checked it on a brand or manufacturer's site.

Note: All newly added deals are marked with a . Deals with a strikeoutwere either sold out or expired at the time of writing.

Best Apple deals

the 9th generation apple ipad in space grayOpens in a new window Credit: Apple Our pick: Apple iPad, 9th gen (WiFi, 64GB)

Why we like it

The ninth-generation Apple iPad from fall 2021 comes equipped with an A13 Bionic chip, a 10.2-inch Retina display with True Tone color technology, and a 12MP Ultra Wide selfie camera with Center Stage, a feature that keeps you in frame if you move. This is a match of the 64GB model's record-low price on Amazon, which was still hanging on from Prime Big Deal Days when we last checked.

Best TV deals

the Samsung 65-inch Q90T QLED 4K TVOpens in a new window Credit: Samsung Our pick: Samsung 65-inch Q90T QLED 4K TV

Why we like it

This Samsung TV is a teensy bit outdated, but $798 is a fantastic price for a bright 65-inch QLED model; other 65-inch QLEDs we found on sale during Prime Big Deal Days were going for upwards of $1,000. Ignore Walmart's $997.99 list price, by the way: It actually retails for $2,699.99 (and is currently marked down to $1,999.99 on the Samsung website), so this is an even better deal than the big box store is letting on. It was out of stock on Amazon at the time of writing.

Why we like it

Nintendo released two new Animal Crossing: New Horizons-themed Switch Lite bundles alongside its usual Mario Kart 8 Deluxeoffering for the 2023 holiday season, and this one is a Walmart exclusive. You'll get an embellished turquoise Switch Lite and a copy of New Horizons(a $259.98 combined value) for the price of the console itself.

Best vacuum deals

Gray Roomba 676 and smartphone with green iRobot screenOpens in a new window Credit: iRobot Our pick: iRobot Roomba 676

Why we like it

Walmart always seems to have a trick up its sleeve when it comes to exclusive Roomba prices. First, it was the (now sold-out) self-emptying Roomba i1+ for $288. Now, it's the Roomba 676 for $139. It's more or less a rebranded Roomba 692 in a different color, offering the same three-stage cleaning system, auto-adjusting cleaning head for transferring between floor types, and Dirt Detect technology. However, the Walmart-exclusive Roomba 676 is currently $25 cheaper than the Roomba 692 at Amazon, making the 676 the cheapest non-discontinued Roomba available right now.

Best kitchen deals

the keurig k supreme filling up a coffee mugOpens in a new window Credit: Keurig Our pick: Keurig K-Supreme

Why we like it

Featuring a dual-position reservoir, four brew sizes, and an iced coffee setting, the K-Supreme is an upgrade over Keurig's standard single-serve coffee machines. It typically retails for $169.99, but you can order it via Walmart for just $90 (or 47% off). Amazon had it on sale for about $138 during Prime Big Deal Days and, for comparison's sake, it's only been cheaper than $90 there three times since the fall of 2020.

Best outdoor deals

the Solo Stove Ranger 2.0 with a stand and a pellet adapterOpens in a new window Credit: Solo Stove Our pick: Solo Stove Ranger 2.0 + stand and pellet adapter

Why we like it

The Solo Stove Ranger 2.0 is the slightly smaller and more portable version of the Solo Stove Bonfire 2.0, Mashable's favorite smokeless fire pit. (Yes, it really is virtually smokeless — if you know what you're doing.) You can bundle it with a matching stand and a wood pellet adapter through Walmart for just $249.99; buying those two accessories separately would set you back an extra $60.

Best beauty tech deals

the dyson corrale hair straightener in its standOpens in a new window Credit: Dyson Our pick: Dyson Corrale hair straightener (refurbished)

Why we like it

A precursor to the newer Airstrait, the Dyson Corrale is a high-end cordless hair straightener that uses "flexing plates" to style with minimal heat damage. Amazon put it on sale for a mere $299.99 during Prime Big Deal Days (or $200 off its $499.99 MSRP), but you can save an additional $100 by going the refurbished route via Walmart. It comes with a charging dock, a charging cable, and a travel pouch.

Best toy deals

the LEGO Classic 90 Years of Play Building Set next to its boxOpens in a new window Credit: LEGO Our pick: Lego Classic 90 Years of Play building set

Why we like it

Released last year in honor of the company's 90th anniversary, this 1,100-piece Lego set contains 15 miniature replicas of well-known Lego toys and builds (plus an extra two bags of colorful bricks). It's priced at $49.99 on the Lego website, but Walmart had it listed for just $19.97 at the time of writing — that's a 60% savings and a $5 drop since the start of its holiday kickoff sale. It's currently sold out on Amazon, where it's never dipped below $32.99.
